Clifden Social Housing

About This Project

As Design Team Lead and Employers Representative, VHA provided architectural and conservation services for the successful revitalisation of two historically significant yet dilapidated buildings and their associated lands in Clifden, Co. Galway. Initially, the site featured two vacant buildings: St. Joseph’s Convent School (a Protected Structure) and a former laundry building. Both structures were in a state of disrepair, necessitating extensive refurbishment for preservation. Additionally, the remaining site was undeveloped and largely overgrown.

Recognising the historical significance of the site and the importance of preserving the existing buildings, VHA responded to Galway County Council’s brief with a thoughtful and high-quality approach. We aimed to achieve a project outcome that respected the past while addressing the need for modern, sustainable housing. Making a positive contribution to the architectural heritage of Clifden, the design team transformed these structures and the surrounding lands into 26 new homes.
